SAIC is seeking a mechanical technician on the OMES II contract with the On-orbit Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (OSAM-1) program in NASA’s Exploration & In-Space Services Projects (NExIS) division.  This position is located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.

OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. NExIS is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test, and operations of the OSAM-1 Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The technician will support mechanical integration across all testbeds and ground support equipment as a member of the OSAM-1 Integration & Test (I&T) team. The OSAM-1 I&T team performs the integration and test of all OSAM-1 hardware including the servicing payload and spacecraft bus.

Job duties include:

  • Contribute to the hands-on mechanical test and integration of hardware to multiple testbeds. This may include mechanical assembly, fabrication, functional testing, proof testing, and hardware reconfiguration.
  • Read and understand assembly instructions; GSFC WOAs
  • Read and understand mechanical drawings, including assembly manufacturing drawings, parts lists, and engineering change documentation
  • Work from verbal and written instructions
  • Operate in a safe manner by observing GSFC Safety Protocols

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of closely-related experience
  • Experience with hardware integration and test, preferably at NASA or in the aerospace industry
  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools, high-precision calibrated tools, power tools, and specialized tools in the performance of daily tasks
  • Forklift, manlift, and crane operations
  • Able to work in cleanroom and manufacturing environments
  • Familiar with Electrostatic discharge hazards and protections
  • Works well with other technicians of varying experience levels and disciplines
  • Perform all phases of structural assembly for large and small assemblies including close tolerance drilling, reaming, riveting, and alignment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain NASA certifications, including but not limited to:
    • NASA Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) certification (GSFC-SH-ESDCO300 300-PG-8730.6.1A*). English proficiency is required to successfully complete the required training and pass testing (written and/or hands-on) to obtain the certification.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Structural bonding application
  • Worked with and modified honeycomb panels, aluminum and steel structural elements
  • Knowledge of various engineering disciplines such as electrical, mechanical, and systems.
  • Experience working with: wire connection lists, schematics, and grounding schemes
  • Familiar with mate-de-mate protocol, wire splicing, soldering, hi-pot testing, and safe-to-mate of harnesses
  • Familiarity with MIL standards and requirements, NASA standards and requirements, AS9100 or ISO 9001
  • Experience troubleshooting complex systems using various types of test equipment
