Job Description


SAIC's Identity and Data Sciences Laboratory (IDSL) is seeking a Human Factors Scientist in the DC metro area with a strong background in human-subjects testing as well as applied research on artificial intelligence (AI) and human-computer interaction. The IDSL performs unique test events with large scale human subjects tests of biometric systems, such as face recognition, and other AI-based systems to understand how they perform when integrated into human workflows. The Human Factors team publishes technical and peer-reviewed papers, and work in an environment that promotes learning and exploration. Publications can be found at


  • Interact with large groups of human-subjects during test events, performing various roles to assist with data collection
  • Collaborate and facilitate development of datasets and methodologies to measure human-algorithm teams
  • Assist with deploying online cognitive studies to validate datasets and methodologies
  • Analyze data using R and/or Python, sharing analysis code via GitHub/Bitbucket
  • Perform video coding analyses and/or coding behaviors in real time and from recorded video
  • Conduct site-surveys of biometric technology and processes in operational travel environments, documenting workflows with human-algorithm teams and general processes
  • Perform structured interviews to document operations and human-subjects' opinions and perceptions on biometric and AI technologies
  • Assist with documentation of research activities including government deliverable reports and government presentations
  • Assist with preparation of manuscripts for publication and other external/academic presentations, as allowed



  • Must be able to obtain DHS suitability
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Advanced degree in human factors, psychology, neuroscience, or other related field (Master's degree + 3 years of experience or Doctoral degree + 0 years of experience)
  • Experience in human-subjects testing including behavioral and/or physiological measurement, survey design, and structured interviews
  • Experience in cognitive testing with a focus on perception of AI technologies  
  • Demonstrated ability to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of behavioral data such as video coding, survey, and interview analysis
  • Knowledge and experience with data analysis with R, Python, or similar statistical analyses
  • Strong computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
