SAIC is seeking a physicist to join our Laser Bioeffects research team conducting basic and applied research on the biological effects of laser exposure.  The individual will conduct research to develop advanced spectroscopic and imaging techniques to study the effects of laser exposure at the tissue, cellular, and sub-cellular levels.  This will be a full-time position based at the Air Force Research Laboratory, JBSA Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Responsibilities include:

• Use advanced spectroscopic and imaging techniques to study cellular and tissue response to laser exposure
• Measure physical properties of cells and tissue pertinent to modeling the response of cells and tissue to laser exposure
• Design and optimize optical systems
• Mentor junior research staff
• Present research findings at national and international scientific conferences
• Author peer-reviewed publications

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in physics, applied physics, biophysics, biomedical engineering or related field
• Experience working with lasers
• Experience with optical system design and optimization
• Must be a U.S. citizen
• Must be able to acquire and maintain a Secret clearance

Desired Qualifications:

• Familiarity with microscopy including fluorescence lifetime imaging or light sheet microscopy
• Biological experience (cell culture, general chemistry, fluorescence labeling)
• Knowledge of machine learning and advanced image processing techniques
• Experience with use of Inverse Adding Doubling (IAD) models to extract material properties from scattering data
• Familiarity with LabVIEW
• Familiarity with MatLab, Python or other programming platform
