Description

Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME), technical support, software development, and perform technical analysis as required for the NRL DoD space-based atmospheric Microwave (MW) Sensors Calibration and Validation (CalVal), US Space Force (USSF) MW sensor demonstrations and MW CubeSat programs.

Support tasks include but are not limited to: the analysis of microwave remote sensing systems, pre-flight specifications and characterizations of microwave radiometer systems, assessments of calibration algorithms, sensor specific ground processing software systems, and the calibration and validation of spaced based microwave radiometric data. Specific MW sensors and programs include the current Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) mission, the ongoing USSF Space Test Program-Houston 8 (STP-H8) Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer (COWVR) and Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems (TEMPEST) mission, the Weather Satellite Follow-on Microwave (WSF)- Microwave (WSF-M)  polarimetric imagers (MWI) and multiple MW CubeSat CalVal efforts.

Qualifications

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education

  • M.S. degree in Meteorology, Oceanography, Physical Science, or in a related Mathematics and Engineering fields. 

Required Experience

  • Bachelors and fourteen (14), Masters and twelve (12), and PhD or JD and nine (9) years of demonstrated global/mesoscale data assimilation (DA) experience. Must act as the primary point-of-contact for the development of operational global and/or mesoscale DA systems including ensemble and hybrid DA systems and scripting for the management of operational job submission and data processing tasks, including observation data handling and error handling; provide recommendations for resolution of research issues related to multi-scale DA problems; must have demonstrable LINUX High Performance Computing (HPC) skill and adaptation of solutions for the operational environment.
    • Must have demonstrable experience working as aproject team member.
    • Demonstrated experience publishing peer-reviewed scientific literature, software documentation, or Navy guides and/or handbooks.
    • Experience in support of Government research is a must.

Desired Experience 

  • Demonstrated experience in meeting Navy METOC operational requirements.
    • Three-to-five years of experience developing, testing, and transitioning Navy operational NWP software systems.
    • Three-to-five years ofexperience developing, testing, and transitioning Navy operational DA software systems.
    • Three-to-five years of experience publishing peer-reviewed scientific literature, software documentation, Navy guides and/or handbooks,Navy climatologiesand port studies.

Target salary range: $150,001 - $175,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
