Join SAIC’s OneSETA Team to provide our government customer with Systems Engineering & Technical Assistance (SETA) support. SETA services range from providing administrative assistance to providing expert technical assistance on national efforts that will contribute to maintaining and expanding the capabilities of homeland security.

SAIC currently has a part-time opening for a specialized consultant to provide facility decontamination expertise and leadership as a Scientist Principal for the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (PIADC) under a contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology (DHS S&T) Directorate. This position can be worked remotely nationwide, but will require around travel to Plum Island, NY. The successful candidate will consult in the design and execution of research projects for the development of validated decontamination methods for foreign animal diseases (FADs) in PIADC’s biocontainment laboratories, BSL-3Ag vivarium, equipment, and large building spaces. The primary FADs that have been used at PIADC are foot-and-mouth disease virus, African swine fever virus, and classical swine fever virus.

The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will be to work with DHS scientists and contractor scientists to:

  • Provide leadership and accredited expertise towards the development of FAD decontamination of large irregular spaces, equipment, ducts, pipework, etc.
  • Implement approaches for measuring and documenting success of the decontamination process (i.e., biological indicators- type, number, placement, etc.; approach for quality assessment/quality control).
  • Document logistical considerations, hazards or challenges encountered, associated costs and lessons learned that can be used by PIADC and other biocontainment facilities, e.g., the National Bio- and Agrodefense Facility.
  • Develop verification and validation SOPs that align in compliance with New York state environmental authorities and regulations from the USDA APHIS Agriculture Select Agent Services (AgSAS).
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders on current and future project status.

This is a part-time on call role that is expected to work 340 hours / year. This position is worked hybrid on-site at Plum Island, NY as well as remote. Travel expenses for this position are covered.  


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors and fourteen (14) years or more experience; Masters and twelve (12) years or more experience; PhD or JD and nine (9) years or more experience
  • Expertise in decontamination of buildings and equipment where work with pathogens occurred and successful submission and approval by regulatory authorities of the decontamination effort.
  • Must be able to obtain a federal public trust clearance and a federal select agent clearance.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Biosafety level -2 or -3 laboratory experience.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills which will be needed for internal and external presentations, reports, and potentially for manuscript preparation.
  • Proficiency in using basic word processing and data management software.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in decontamination of facilities that have had select agents in laboratories, equipment, laboratory support spaces, and a vivarium.
  • Preference is for highly motivated, dependable, and well-organized scientists who are also good team players.
  • Travel will be required for consultations at Plum Island Animal Disease Center.

Target salary range: $200,001 - $225,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
