This is an exciting opportunity to be a member of the SAIC LITES II System Administration team supporting cutting edge computing systems and research at the NASA Langley Research Center.   SAIC has an immediate need for a Systems Administrator Senior to support the NASA Langley Information Technology Enhanced Services II (LITES II) contract at NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. The LITES II provides for IT support services in the areas of science and engineering applications, some center infrastructure applications, data center support, business management applications support, and IT project management support. As a member of the LITES II team, this Systems Administrator Senior will manage and support Windows and Macintosh desktops, Windows server infrastructure, laboratory, and scientific equipment supporting the Langley research mission.  Ensure the day-to-day operation and ongoing support of LITES II Servers and Systems including event, fault, and performance management systems. Help develop solutions to monitor, notify, and correct anomalies/alarms. Help design the environment, hardware specifications, and software layers to provide for a reliable, scalable, secure, and highly available Windows/Macintosh Systems Environment. Ensure that desktop and server hardware and operating systems are installed, properly configured, and operating as expected on production, development, or lab systems running on Macintosh and Windows environments. Configure operating systems and utilities to support customer requirements. Work closely with vendors or other groups within the organization to correct problems or perform root cause analysis. Analyze and make formal recommendations on optimization and capacity planning for systems. Develop and maintain documentation related to the design, installation, administration, and maintenance of multiple systems in a distributed computing environment. Ensure stability, viability, and maintenance of the 24/7 mission-critical production environment. Prepare weekly reports on significant events. Help write test plans and conduct product evaluations in lab environments. Perform system and application account management activities. Participate on a 24/7 on-call rotation to support critical incident management events. This position will be supporting multiple research branches/offices within the Langley environment.

 

 

We’re looking for a US Citizen with Apple/Macintosh and Windows/Windows Server administration experience.  Linux experience is a plus.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operations of Macintosh desktop systems, Windows desktops, servers and clusters as well as supporting some basic networking issues
  • Proactively monitor, analyze, and correct system issues
  • Developing scripts to automate repetitive tasks or tools to enhance support of systems
  • System performance analysis and tuning
  • Installing and supporting user requested software
  • Working with IT Security to maintain System Security Plans
  • Ensure the day-to-day operation and ongoing support of LITES II Servers and Systems including event, fault, and performance management systems
  • Ensure that server and desktop hardware and operating systems are installed, properly configured, and operating as expected on production, development, or lab systems running on various version of Windows and Macintosh environments
  • Configure operating systems and utilities to support customer requirements.
  • Work closely with vendors or other groups within the organization to correct problems or perform root cause analysis
  • Ensure stability, viability, and maintenance of the 24/7 mission-critical production environment.

Qualifications

Required Education: 

  • Bachelor's and 2 years of experience; Masters and 0 years related experience.
  • Additional years of experience accepted in lieu of degree

Desired Education:

  • Computer Science or Cyber Security Bachelor’s Degree

Clearance Requirement: 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.

 

Required Skills:

  • Understanding of current Macintosh desktop systems and OS
  • Understanding of current Windows desktops, servers, clusters and OS
  • "Quick study" and driven to learn how to quantify, analyze and resolve complex issues
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and also independently
  • Understanding of IT security best practices
  • Understanding of basic networking concepts
  • Managing infrastructure services such as NFS, DHCP, TFTP, and NIS
  • Ability to compile and install various user requested open source applications
  • Understanding of RAID disk storage systems and NFS

 

Desired Skills

  • Knowledge of Linux clusters, servers, and workstations
  • knowledge/experience working with VMWare hypervisors and architecture
