SAIC is currently seeking a Chemist subject matter expert (Chemist SME) to provide R&D support for Department Homeland Security Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction (DHS CWMD). This postion can be worked 100% remote nationwide.

The ideal candidate will have an extensive background in chemistry, chemical engineering, chemical detection technologies, chemical subject matter expertise, and be able to provide technical support with expert knowledge of analytical and physical chemistry methods, and/or chemical engineering relevant to the characterization of chemical, nuclear and radiological materials.  Duties and responsibilities include research and development as it relates to materiel solutions in support of the DHS mission, PMO support, interacting with government and private industry representatives as well as National Laboratories and other SMEs, engineers, and support staff within CWMD.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support with expert knowledge of analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering methods related to the characterization of chemical, nuclear and radiological materials.
  • Knowledge or direct experience in chemical detection techniques and principles (aerosol detection, gas forming reactions, low-vapor-pressure toxic chemicals)
  • Serve as a chemical subject matter expert (SME) for CWMD CBRN research and development efforts
  • Advise CWMD Research & Development (R&D) division on R&D technologies, studies, and programs related to detection of chemical weapons of mass destruction
  • Perform complex analysis to check accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work to meet project technical requirements and laboratory data quality objectives
  • Perform scientific and engineering modeling of sensor systems employing new and untested chemical detection technologies
  • Perform technical analysis and interpretation of complex data sets generated by research and development efforts to enhance detection capabilities (e.g. networked sensors, improved algorithms)
  • Provide strategic advice, technical guidance and expertise to program and project staff
  • Provide detailed analysis, evaluation and recommendations for improvements, optimization development, maintenance efforts for client-specific or mission critical challenges and issues;
  • Consult with client to define need or problem supervises studies and leads surveys to collect and analyze data to provide advice and recommend solutions.
  • Support efforts to develop and deploy an information architecture that can flexibly ingest chemical detection sensor data and other information streams through a scalable cloud computing infrastructure and performs data analytics to characterize backgrounds, determine patterns, and provide domain awareness
  • Perform scientific and technical evaluation of the analyzed results from research and development studies
  • Generate, edit, and interpret scientific reports based upon technical results from CWMD research and development efforts
  • Serve as a technical expert working with the federal staff to assist in development of forward-focused plans, acting in an A&AS / SETA capacity

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • MS and 13 yrs experience, or a Ph.D + 10 yrs experience
  • Must be a US Citizen
  • Must have an active Secret clearance with ability to obtain a SCI
  • Experience and background in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering
  • Prior project or program management support experience a plus
  • Must be able to initiate, supervise, develop requirements, and coordinate projects from  inception to conclusion

Desired Qualifications:

  • Expert knowledge and experience in analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, or chemical engineering related to the detection and characterization of chemical, nuclear, and radiological materials
  • Knowledge or direct experience in chemical detection techniques and principles (aerosol detection, gas forming reactions, low-vapor-pressure toxic chemicals)
  • Characterization or testing (field or laboratory) of prototype chemical detectors and systems
  • Familiarity with instrumentation development and data analysis
  • Ideal Candidate Backgrounds: Analytical/Physical Chemist, Organic chemist with T&E experience, Chemical Engineer with experience in the areas of analytical/physical/organic chemistry
  • Familiarity with fielded chemical detection systems; Knowledge of current baselines and standard technology

Target salary range: $145,001 - $155,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
