Job Description


SAIC is seeking a Senior Mechanisms Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The position is located in Lanham, MD and may be placed as an SAIC or contract team-member employee.

JPSS is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next-generation operational Earth observation program that acquires and distributes global environmental data primarily from multiple polar-orbiting satellites. The program plays a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans and coasts, and the space environment, which support the Nation’s economy and protect lives and property.

The JPSS Flight Project, is responsible for the management of the Suomi National Polar Project (S-NPP) technical support, and post launch support.  JPSS Flight Project management responsibilities include the design, development, manufacturing, integration and test, verification and documentation of the JPSS flight systems.  The Project monitors the launch vehicle acquisition by KSC and provides payload launch integration support.  KSC provides software, launch site facilities, and launch site support services required to successfully integrate the observatory to the LV, verify their integration, and conduct pre-launch and launch operations.


  • Support in the planning, organizing, scheduling, managing and directing of mechanical systems related activities during the design, development, fabrication and assembly, integration and test and launch of the JPSS observatories. 
  • Participate in program status meetings, telecons, peer reviews, and major project reviews for spacecraft, instruments, launch vehicle, mission operations system, and science data system.
  • Support with requirements definition, flow-down, validation and verification.
  • Prepare/Review project documentation and submit comments and recommendations.
  • Prepare and present technical information for technical meetings / reviews / briefings.
  • Participate in instrument, spacecraft and observatory testing and anomaly resolution activities, as required.
  • Analyze configuration, design, and procedural changes submitted to the Project change control boards. 



  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and 15+ years related experience.
  • Strong ability to independently lead and interact with distributed team members and different corporate cultures.
  • Understanding of NASA Systems Engineering processes.


    • Knowledge of  launch and mission operations.
    • Knowledge of satellite and instrument design, integration and test.
