SAIC is seeking an Electro-Mechanical Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
 
The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next generation operational Earth observation program that acquires and distributes global environmental data primarily from multiple polar-orbiting satellites. The program plays a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans and coasts, and the space environment, which support the Nation’s economy and protect lives and property.

The JPSS Flight Project is responsible for the design, development, manufacturing, integration and test, verification and documentation of the JPSS flight systems, JPSS-2 through -4, which comprise three remaining satellite launches, each with four or more instruments and two existing on-orbit assets, Suomi-NPP and NOAA-20, formerly JPSS-1.  In addition to the satellite development, the Project also monitors the launch vehicle acquisition by KSC and provides payload launch integration support.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Support in the planning, organizing, scheduling, managing and directing of electro-mechanical systems related activities during the design, development, fabrication and assembly, integration and test and launch of the JPSS observatories. 
  •  Participate in program status meetings, telecons, peer reviews, and major project reviews for spacecraft, instruments, launch vehicle, mission operations system, and science data system.
  • Support with requirements definition, flow-down, validation and verification.
  •  Prepare/Review project documentation and submit comments and recommendations.
  • Prepare and present technical information for technical meetings / reviews / briefings.
  • Participate in instrument, spacecraft and observatory testing and anomaly resolution activities, as required. 
  •  Analyze configuration, design, and procedural changes submitted to the Project change control boards.
  •  Evaluate and disposition verification and documentation artifacts in support of flight hardware deliveries and requirements close-out.

Qualifications

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelors and nine (9) years or more experience; Masters and seven (7) years or more experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Electro-Mechanical Systems skills including controls engineers, systems engineers, electrical engineers, mechanism engineers.

DESIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Familiarity with aerospace electro-mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with pre-launch satellite testing.
  • Familiarity with low-Earth orbit satellite systems.
  • Experience with controls design (including close loop, feedback and feed forward controls of mechanism) and testing (including dynamic jitter testing).
  • EE testing of actuators and their control (phase and gain margin and analysis).
  • Experience with position sensors and their control (optical encoder, resolver and close loop positioning control of mechanism).
  • EE testing of mechanisms design (including Electromechanical requirement verification, mechanism development and design methodology).
