Job Description

SAIC in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, is seeking an early to mid-career Systems Engineer to provide support to the Communications Services Project (CSP).  The position is located in Cleveland, OH.

CSP has been formulated to transition legacy government space communications services to commercially available communication and navigation services for near Earth missions.  The goals of CSP are to 1) Acquire end-to-end commercial satellite communications (SATCOM) services that meet NASA user mission needs in near Earth; 2) Transition commercial SATCOM services to NASA missions; and 3) Manage the implementation and operations of the NASA commercial SATCOM services enterprise.

The CSP intends to minimize the need for NASA unique capabilities for spacecraft communications in favor of being one of many users of commercial SATCOM capabilities and subsequent services.  The CSP will work with the commercial market to explore mutually beneficial opportunities to bolster American industry, reduce cost to NASA, and maximize interoperability between government and commercial service providers.  CSP is currently establishing multiple partnerships between NASA and commercial SATCOM companies to develop flight demonstrations to determine the feasibility of commercial SATCOM capabilities.

The successful candidate will support the Lead Systems Engineer in the following activities of system engineering and integration (SE&I): 1) Develop requirements documentation, 2) Develop Concept of Operations (ConOps), 3) Plan and support project life-cycle reviews, 4) Participate in and assess trade studies, 5) Provide systems insight on the development of communication systems operations, 6) Assess contractor milestone deliverables, and 7) Support project meetings and review boards.

  • Knowledge or familiarity with system ConOps
  • Familiarity with NASA and/or commercial SATCOM
  • Experience in successfully leading teams, projects, and/or activities

Work Location Clarification:

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the current primary location of work is via telework from each staff member's home. In select cases, where an approved Return to On-site Work (RTOW) request has been approved, some or all of the work may be performed on-site at NASA GRC.  The work location for this effort will be periodically re-evaluated based on guidance from GRC with regards to the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Teleworking is a temporary measure.  On-site work is expected post-pandemic.

COVID Policy: Prospective and/or new employees are required to adhere with SAIC's vaccination policy. All SAIC employees must be fully vaccinated and they must submit proof of vaccination on their first day of employment. Prospective or new employees may seek an exemption to the vaccination requirement at Contact Us and must have an approved exemption prior to the start of their employment. Where work is performed strictly at a customer site, customer site vaccination requirements preempt SAIC's vaccination policy.
