SAIC is seeking a Mechanism Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the On-Orbit Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing OSAM-1 program in NASA’s Exploration and In-Space Services Projects (NExIS) division. This position is located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.

OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. NExIS is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test, and operations of the OSAM-1 Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The engineer will provide senior electromechanical engineering support to the OSAM-1 Advanced Tool Drive Subsystem (ATDS) team; specifically, the Camera Position Mechanism.

Job duties include:

• Using PTC CREO and Windchill CAD modeling and Product Data Management software at a proficient skill level.
• Creating and reading manufacturing drawings of parts and assemblies.
• Presenting and supporting design reviews.
• Writing and reviewing assembly procedures.
• Writing and reviewing testing procedures.
• Planning test campaigns and writing test scripts.
• Writing work order documentation for assembly and test activities.
• Assessing complex issues and recommending resolution to the team and management; implement resolutions.

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree with 9+ years of related experience, Masters, and 7 years or more experience; PhD or JD and 4 years or more experience.
• Experience and knowledge of Flex Harness manufacturing techniques and dimensional inspections used to verify workmanship.
• Experience and knowledge of IPC standards and development of procurement documents regarding flex harness material stack up drawings, statement of work, and specifications.
• Experience and knowledge of Flex harness integration and testing in mechanisms to verify functionality and life cycle requirements.
• Experience with stepper motor requirements and testing specifications such as holding and running torque, back drive, and pull in/out torque needed for mechanism characterization.
• Experience in the areas of aerospace mechanism design, fabrication, assembly, and testing.
• Experience with both performance and environmental testing such as vibration and thermal vacuum for space flight mechanisms.
• Experience with working in a clean room to perform testing of aerospace hardware.
• Ability to obtain/maintain NASA Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) certification (GSFC-SH-ESDCO300 300-PG-8730.6.1A*). English proficiency is required to successfully complete the required training and pass testing (written and/or hands-on) to obtain NASA ESD certification.
