Job Description


SAIC is seeking a motivated, career and customer-oriented Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Experimental Scientist (Electronic engineer, experimental physicist, or similar) to join our team at Fort Belvoir, Virginia to provide unparalleled support to our customer and to begin an exciting and rewarding career.  This position provides Advisory and Assistance Services (A&AS) to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Nuclear Technologies Department, developing state-of-the-art capabilities to ensure DoD weapon systems and facilities are hardened and survivable against the effects of nuclear weapons.

The successful candidate will analyze nuclear weapon effects on weapons and communications systems; support development, application and integration of nuclear environmental and effects protection standards; support development of electromagnetic (EM) electronic system effects tools; and provide technical guidance on EMP and high power electromagnetic (HPEM) test planning, witnessing testing and data analysis; and EMP and HPEM hardening solutions.    

The candidate will assist with development and execution of a portfolio of software, hardware and testing projects; research new DoD EMP survivability requirements, conduct market research for qualified performers, and translate technology areas and concepts to meaningfully to others on the DTRA and DoD nuclear survivability missions.  Provides advice and facilitates government acquisition actions by writing statements of work, evaluating proposals, and monitoring contractor performance.  Assists the government in aligning the portfolio for rapid transition of emerging tools and analytical capabilities to key end-users.


Education and Expereince

  • Bachelor of Science plus 9 years relevant experience, Master of Science plus 7 years or Doctorate plus 4 years of relevant experience in Electrical Engineering hardware development, experimental Physics, experimental Nuclear Engineering, or other experimental scientific/engineering field.
  • Experience conducting EMP verification assessments is desired, to include system/facility site surveys; test plan development and coordination; test execution and assessment; data analysis and report and briefing preparation.
  • Experience with EM technologies and methodologies including: 1) testing, 2) system survivability analysis, hardware, and software, and 3) pulsed power (HF RF pulsers, SREMP pulsers, and Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD)-E3 pulsers) is desired. 
  • Experience with the following standards and handbooks is highly desired:  MIL-STD-2169, MIL-STD-188-125-1, MIL-STD-188-125-2; MIL-STD-3023; MIL-STD-4023; and MIL-HDBK-423 and IEEE and IEC electromagnetic standards.
  • Experience working with other Federal agencies, industry, and National and/or Service Laboratories.  
  • Strong technical project management background.  Level II or III Program Management Certification and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is desired.  
  • Ability to translate requirements and observations into clearly defined written products (briefings, reports, White Papers) in short timeframes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.  The candidate must be capable of communicating with technical experts and senior leaders both verbally, in writing, and with the use of PowerPoint. 
  • Skilled in using personal computer and standard office automation systems (e.g., Microsoft Office, M/S Project). 
  • Travel is required (10% to 25%). 


  • A DoD Secret clearance is required.  Must have or be able to obtain TS/SCI.
