SAIC seeks an experienced Systems Safety Engineer to provide Systems Safety Engineering support for Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) projects that design and develop payloads that will fly on the International Space Station (ISS). The chosen candidate will perform safety analyses and ensure the projects are in compliance with NASA and ISS Program requirements. This position is located at the Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA, with potential for off-site remote access.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Systems Safety Engineering position provides technical safety support, including conducting hazard analyses, to determine how the design, integration, and operation of the system can be enhanced to ensure compliance with current safety requirements.
  • Work with design, technical, and mission support personnel and engineers to identify hazards, controls, applicable safety requirements and means for demonstrating compliance with safety requirements.
  • Develop and oversee System Safety Analyses and other documentation including Safety Data Packages and Hazard Reports.
  • Assess design documentation and test procedures and reports for identification of safety hazards and compliance to requirements.
  • Participate in the ISS Safety Review Process with the Johnson Space Center (JSC) ISS Payload Safety Review Panel and other major design and operational reviews.
  • This position expects that the candidate be able to work independently and maintain a positive relationship between NASA and the contractor at all times.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required.
  • The candidate should possess outstanding leadership skills and the ability to communicate safety issues and risks as they apply to programmatic, technical, and mission concerns.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelors and five (5) years or more experience; Masters and three (3) years or more experience; PhD and 0 years related experience.

 

Skills:

  • BS or MS in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, or Safety Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 5 years of experience in operations and/or engineering.
  • Knowledge and experience with the ISS Program Payload Safety Requirements and Processes desired.
  • NASA Safety and Mission Assurance experience is desired.
  • Spacecraft vehicle and system knowledge is desired.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment a must.

 

Clearance:

  • Candidate must successfully pass a NACI background investigation and must be eligible to obtain a Secret Clearance.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting, standing, walking required. Light physical work.

 

Travel:

  • Occasional travel may be required.
