SAIC is seeking a Senior Mission Systems Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the OSAM-1 program in NASA’s Exploration and In-space Services Division (NExIS) at Goddard Space Flight Center. This position is located in Greenbelt, MD, but is temporarily remote due to Covid-19. Some travel to California will be required post-Covid.

The OSAM-1 mission is a Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) NExIS managed mission. OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. The NEXIS is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test and operations of the OSAM-1 Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The engineer will serve as the Deputy Systems Engineer on the OSAM-1 Mission Systems Engineering team. SPIDER is a payload, built by Maxar (Palo Alto, CA), and delivered to the OSAM-1 mission.  The SPIDER (SPace Infrastructure DExterous Robot) is a Class D payload that with achieve the following on-orbit assembly and manufacturing functions: 

  • Assemble large Ka quality reflector antenna in-space and characterize its RF performance
  • Demonstrate dexterous robotics system operating under supervised autonomy
  • Pultrude and characterize a 10m long, thermally stable, precision structural beam
  • Remove and re-install the beam manufacturing unit

The SPIDER Deputy Systems engineer supports the SPIDER Payload manager and lead SPIDER Systems Engineer with typical out-of-house payload systems work such as payload requirements (Level 3.5), verification and validation, interfaces, tracking, technical risks, technical performance metrics margins, etc. working with the Maxar team who is responsible for the build of the payload.

Job duties include:

  • Cross-purpose systems engineering support for a spaceflight mission through integration and test, launch, and operations of the hardware
  • Requirements definition, verification, validation, and management
  • Tracking of vendor interfaces, risks, technical performance metric margins
  • Planning of on-orbit operations
  • Proactively identifying and solving technical problems during all project life phases
  • System analysis with emphasis on mission success, risk, safety and security
  • Development of technical documentation including test procedures, test and status reports, procurement specifications, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
  • Tiger team participation, management, and tracking
  • Use of engineering methodologies and techniques to perform technical trades
  • Development, coordination and presentation of NASA review and Key Decision Point presentations (e.g. CDR, SRR, ORR, trade study presentations, monthly reviews, etc.)

Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or closely related field with 9+ years of related experience 
  • Strong systems engineering experience, preferably at NASA or on a spaceflight mission
  • Experience with space flight hardware, integration and test, and operations
  • Strong experience in the post-CDR hardware integration and test phase of the mission lifecycle
  • Strong experience in requirements development, verification, analysis, and validation
  • Experience working with vendors and out-of-house development
  • Knowledge of system engineering tools and processes
  • Experience with systems engineering disciplines and requirements-management processes
  • Cross-discipline knowledge and experience
  • Proficiency in exercising discretion and independent judgment in evaluating potential approaches and solutions to critical problems and determining appropriate resolutions
  • Proficiency in recommending deviations from established policies and procedures
  • Ability to attend to assignments with only limited direction

  • Experience with NASA mission life cycle and review cycle (design reviews, requirements reviews, integration reviews, trade studies, etc.)

Target salary range: $145,001 - $155,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
