Description

The Radiological and Nuclear (RN) Junior Physicist is a member of the team supporting a combination of research and development (R&D) and product acquisition activities to accomplish the development and deployment of RN detection systems for the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Office.

General tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Support R&D activities for RN detection technology, including development of system and operational requirements, analyses of technical alternatives and issues, requests for proposals, and other systems engineering documentation.
  • Support technical and program reviews and technology readiness assessments in accordance with DHS acquisition processes.
  • Provide assistance on R&D programs at varying levels of development, from basic and applied research through operational test demonstrations with potential users.
  • Assist with technology transition as R&D technology is incorporated into CWMD acquisition programs.
  • Participate in system integration status meetings and technical discussions with CWMD program managers, vendors, and support contractors, and provide status reports.
  • Participate in R&D test planning meetings, help develop test and analysis plans, and help analyze test results.
  • Assist in identifying program risks, developing response plans, and providing status updates.
  • Work, interact and communicate effectively with CWMD Office program managers, support contractors, and national laboratory personnel.

Qualifications

Bachelors and 0 years related experience in Nuclear Physics or Nuclear Engineering.  A degree in Physics, Radiochemistry, or other closely related field may also be acceptable.

Clearance: Must be able to obtain a SECRET clearance and be eligible for DHS Suitability.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of DHS or DoD systems engineering and acquisition processes including DHS’s Systems Engineering Life Cycle (SELC) is highly desirable.
  • Experience with nuclear modeling codes such as GADRAS and MCNP is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Highly proficient in MS Office.
  • Clearance: TOP SECRET and current DHS Suitability.
