Job Description


This is an exciting opportunity to be an active member of the LITES II system administration team supporting cutting edge High Performance Computing (HPC) systems at NASA Langley Research Center. The team supports a 1200+ node, on-premises supercomputer system with high performance Lustre storage and Infiniband interconnect, serving the center’s high end research computing needs.  The scope also includes support of branch level HPC cluster resources and desktop workstations, supporting research and mission computing.


Note: This position is temporarily REMOTE / VIRTUAL / Work from Home due to COVID-19, but will be permanently located onsite in Hampton, VA.


Job Description:

  • Operations of the Linux clusters, servers, workstations, networking and storage systems
  • Proactively monitor, analyze, and correct system issues
  • Developing scripts to automate repetitive tasks or tools to enhance support of systems
  • System performance analysis and tuning
  • Building, installing and supporting user requested software
  • Support evaluations and assessments of new HPC technologies
  • End user support in tracking and resolving issues via ticketing system.


Required Experience:

  • At least 5+ years of Linux system administration experience using the command line; experience with RHEL/CentOS is a plus
  • Experience writing scripts in a UNIX environment – bash/k-shell/borne shell (preferred), perl or python, etc.
  • Ability to compile and install various user requested open source applications
  • Understanding of disk storage systems (RAID, ZFS, LUNs)
  • "Quick study" and driven to learn how to quantify, analyze and resolve complex issues.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and also independently
  • Ability and willingness to communicate tasks and concepts to others
  • Good documentation skills
  • Understanding of IT security best practices
  • Understanding of basic networking concepts


Experience in the following areas would be considered a plus:

  • VMWare ESXi / vCenter server systems
  • Supporting a research computing environment
  • Managing gitlab servers
  • Managing infrastructure services such as DNS, DHCP, NIS
  • Solaris Systems Administration (especially version 10 or later)
  • Batch systems such as PBSPro.



  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience 
  • 4 additional years of related experience will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.



  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
