Job Description


SAIC at the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, VA is seeking to hire an experienced Simulation Systems Software Engineer with Geographic Information Systems expertise. You will work as a member of the flight simulation team supporting the Simulation Development and Analysis Branch under the Simulation and Aircraft Services (SAS) contract with NASA. This role requires working with geospatial type source data (imagery, elevation, vector) and includes modifying, projecting and creating databases used in the simulation.

The Simulation and Aircraft Services (SAS) contract provides full life cycle flight simulation software and hardware services and flight simulation infrastructure engineering services for LaRC ground-based and flight research systems and facilities. Hardware services include engineering, operations, and maintenance of the simulation hardware and software infrastructure. Infrastructure engineering services include modification of existing infrastructure, design and implementation of new infrastructure, and support for simulation operations and maintenance activities.

The Flight Simulation Facilities (FSF) are comprised of computing systems including the Real-Time Computer Systems, a six-degree-of-freedom motion base, four full-sized simulator cockpits, and a multi-purpose re-configurable test and evaluation simulator. The FSF also include Systems Integration and Laboratories.

This role is temorarily remote due to Covid-19.


Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelors in computer science, engineering, mathematics or physical sciences and three (3) years or more experience

A combination of the following basic skills is required:

  • Strong Math background (Linear Algebra, Geometry, Discrete Mathematics)
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Graphics 
  • Programable Shaders
  • 3D modeling
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Image Processing

A combination of the following specific skills and experience is required:

  • C++ (highly preferred)
  • OpenCV
  • OpenSceneGraph (highly preferred)
  • OpenGL
  • OpenGL graphics pipeline and rasterization
  • GLSL (GL Shading Language)
  • Compute Shaders
  • GDAL
  • QGIS, GlobalMapper, or ArcGis
  • Presagis Creator – OpenFlight modeling
  • PhotoShop and/or GIMP

Desired Skills 

  • CUDA
  • Vulcan
  • 3D Modeling in Blender

Required Clearance

  • Must be able to obtain a public trust prior to starting work.
