Job Description


SAIC is looking for a Payload Engineer to support a dynamic program in Redondo Beach, California.  This position requires an active TS/SCI with Poly.

Payload Engineering requires a payload engineer with broad technical expertise in spacecraft payload design and integration with a special emphasis in Payload-A (PL-A).  The selected candidate will be an integral participant in PL-A design, performance analysis, integration, and hardware development.  Key areas of focus include payload design trades, performance predictions and/or evaluations, payload and system integration, integration and test monitoring, design and hardware issue tracking.  Candidate should be experienced in the design & integration of satellite payloads and knowledgeable of space system development and space vehicle development.  The following tasks are representative of those that will be accomplished at the request of the customer:


  • Support the customer in the oversight of the design, integration and test of spacecraft payloads
  • Provide expert advice and coordination concerning payload development, production planning and execution, and integration & test
    • Assess feasibility of new payload hardware insertions and functionality enhancements
    • Review and coordinate on changes to specifications, ICDs, and system level requirements documentation pertaining to the functionality and accommodation of payload hardware onto the satellite bus
    • Review manufacturing specifications for accuracy and ensure documentation is complete and accurate
    • Review drawings, documents, and procedures for payload hardware design, manufacturing, integration, program planning and execution:  provide comments to the contractor and/or government
    • Track development issues, significant accomplishments, and upcoming events and provide weekly status updates to the customer
    • Attend unit and payload level design reviews and program management reviews to assess design maturity, requirements compliance and to provide informed technical recommendations to the USG
    • Identify and assess emerging risks; develop and evaluate proposed burn-own plans
    • Review prime contractor readiness to proceed into manufacturing and test
    • Provide expert advice/analysis on interface considerations for new payload developments
    • Coordinate with payload subsystem leads, branch chiefs and division chiefs both within S&L and outward to SE&I/AP in support of new payload and payload subsystem initiatives
  • Provide support to launch and satellite on-orbit test as required by the customer
  • Attend branch meetings as appropriate at the request of the customer to coordinate support activities
  • Provide technical evaluation of payload efforts in contractor Engineering Change Proposals (ECPs)
  • Attend contractor milestone reviews (e.g. PDR, CDR, pre-test, pre-ship, and other meetings) to provide technically based recommendations regarding satisfaction of payload-related review entrance and exit criteria
  • Provide support to factory integration and test activities as required
  • Develop productive relationships with prime contractor counterparts, functional counterparts, and other payload & payload subsystem subject matter experts
  • Advise and mentor USG payload subsystem personnel regarding payload subsystem design elements
  • Other duties as specified by the customer


TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and nine (9) years or more experience; Masters and seven (7) years or more experience ; PhD or JD and four (4) years or more experience.
