Description

A data center engineer is needed for a Government Owned, Contractor Operated data center located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The job includes information technology (IT) equipment installation, network cabling, maintenance and troubleshooting. In addition, the position provides monitoring, operating and coordination of maintenance for the power and cooling infrastructure that supports the IT equipment at the hosted data center and various customer site computer rooms around the U.S.A.


Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the racking, cabling, maintenance and troubleshooting of IT equipment and cabling infrastructure within a data center
  • Responsible for the operational inventory of all data center equipment in the configuration management database (CMDB) and data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools
  • Analyze and resolve infrastructure critical issues
  • Be a resource for remote engineering and operations teams representing data center concepts through production deployments
  • Ensure all equipment is labeled in compliance with asset management standards
  • Create, develop, and maintain datacenter infrastructure site documentation, including floor layouts, rack elevations, and network cabling point to point baseline documents
  • Deploy structured cable solutions to support engineered network topologies
  • Manage electrical and mechanical operations in the computer rooms focusing on availability, service delivery, and hosted facility customer relationship management
  • Monitor, coordinate security access and provide escorting within the computer room
  • Maintain work tools, spare parts, copper, fiber and power cord inventory
  • Develop and maintain processes and procedures associated with the management and deployment of data center infrastructure covering power planning, structured cabling, and mechanical needs
  • Participate in project coordination meetings, and clearly communicate any necessary or recommended updates to project scheduling
  • Deploy, configure and maintain DCIM software
  • Interact with the Government regarding data center engineering technical considerations and for associated problems, issues or conflicts
  • Perform computer room operations during day shift (typically 8:00AM – 4:00PM M-F) with on-call support 24x7 for troubleshooting
  • 10-15% travel to various regional computer rooms, with customer approval.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Bachelors and two (2) years or more experience; Masters and 0 years or more experience
  • Must be an effective communicator, both orally and in writing, and be able to discuss both cabling and networking issues with network users, administrators, consultants, architects and engineers.
  • Must be able to operate with minimal direction for job duties, take personal responsibility, and have a passion to approach all aspects of the job with enthusiasm.
  • Knowledge and experience of providing hands-on break/fix Server & Network Support.
  • Experience in cabling infrastructure and network design of copper and fiber-optic cabling infrastructures.
  • Experience in deployment and installation of switches, routers and servers.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills needed to manage technical challenges, analyze, understand, and interpret data.
  • Ability to provide remote clear, accurate and timely communications within conference bridge environments with other program technical personnel, government overseers, and senior managers.
  • Strong personal computer & IT skill sets, including, but not limited to, Google GSuite, MS Office and drawing tools such as MS VISIO.
  • Experience with information technology service management tools (e.g. ServiceNow)
  • Personal qualities to include integrity, respect for others, personal responsibility, and a passion to approach all aspects of the job with enthusiasm.
Desired Education, Experience, & Skills
  • Knowledge of all aspects of data center power distribution including facility and cabinet based PDUs, ATSs, and UPSs.
  • Diverse knowledge of HVAC dynamics including airflow measurement, floor tile placement and ASHRE cooling optimization methods.
  • Knowledge of DCIM tools and experience with implementation, specifically with Sunbird dcTrack/PowerIQ.
  • Data center training certifications (e.g. DCCA, DCEP, DCIS, DCOS, CDCP)
  • ITIL V4 Foundation certification

Clearance Required

  • Must be a US Citizen and possess a US “Public Trust” clearance, Secret (or higher) clearance, or be able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
