FAA has established a data lake and analysis portal called the Enterprise
Information Management (EIM) system to support the application of Machine
Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and other Advanced Analytics techniques to
aviation data for the improvement of the National Airspace System (NAS). The
EIM system provides a significant opportunity for FAA programs, members of the
aviation industry, and citizen data scientists to participate in analysis
efforts as a vibrant community by leveraging the EIM platform and avoiding
duplication of effort. In today’s aviation analysis environment, hundreds of
isolated groups are creating their own data repositories, extraction,
transformation, and loading (ETL) processes, analytics methodologies, and
quality control approaches (if quality control is being done at all). Through
the use and enhancement of the EIM platform, and through development of
guidance documents and execution of communications plans, the duplication of
effort can be significantly reduced, analysis accuracy and transparency can be
increased, and safety and efficiency of the NAS can be improved. Expected topics of advanced analytics include:
Oceanic ADS-B Analysis
Runway Incursion/Airport Surface Safety
737 Max Analysis
analysis team will coordinate with the FAA to select a small number (e.g., 2 or
3) uses cases to pursue as pilot projects within this task order effort. Once selected, topics for analysis will examine such aspects as:
Availability of data
Ethics assurance and regulatory compliance
Guidance for ML/AI infrastructure and processes
Common metrics to be used for comparison
Verification and Validation (V&V) methods
Exhibits solutions to problems of unusually complex which require a high degree of ingenuity and innovation. Challenges are always unique and solutions may serve precedent for future decisions.
FREEDOM TO ACT:
Often acts independently to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of operational programs. Work is checked only to the effectiveness of results obtained, typically requiring a long-term perspective. Virtually self-supervisory. Makes final decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures operations' effective achievement of objectives. IMPACT:
Decisions affect the financial, employee, or public relations posture of the organization. Erroneous decisions or recommendations would have a long-term negative effect on organization's reputation and business posture.
Serves as consultant to top management in long-range goals and objectives, company policies, programs and capabilities. Prime spokeperson on company's capabilities and future directions. Often instrumental in attracting and obtaining major new company business.
