SAIC is seeking a SmallSat Systems Engineer on the NASA OMES II Contract in support of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The position is located in Lanham, MD.
The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next-generation operational Earth observation program that acquires and distributes global environmental data primarily from multiple polar-orbiting satellites. The program plays a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans and coasts, and the space environment, which support the Nation’s economy and protect lives and property.
NOAA is exploring options for the next generation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) weather satellite systems. These will be used to generate critical Sensor and Environmental Data Records and support the National Weather Service Numerical Weather Prediction systems. The NOAA National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) is exploring new options for innovative technologies and acquisition strategies for demonstration in the 2020s to augment and eventually potentially replenish the JPSS program of record. NOAA has recently executed the NOAA Satellite Observing Systems Architecture (NSOSA) Study. The analysis identified disaggregation of LEO mission components, currently aggregated on S-NPP and JPSS program satellites, as a favorable constellation approach.
This position would be assisting the JPSS Program Office in developing instrument and mission concepts in support of this next-generation program. The SmallSat engineer will be expected to:
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
-Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline with 9+ years relevant experience, or equivalent work experience
-Experience leading/supporting multidisciplinary teams
-Familiarity with spacecraft and instrument operations (Microwave & Infrared Sounders)
-Strong technical background in systems engineering and mission modeling
-Strong interpersonal skills with effective technical writing and briefing skills
-Ability to work independently and productively with minimal direction
-Experience leading a mission from conops to orbit
-Knowledge of Ground Systems
