Job Description


JOB DESCRIPTION: This is an 8 week project for a college –level student in / approaching junior year and working towards a Mechanical Engineering degree. The candidate will work with practicing engineers to build a model that can be used to estimate the effect of different cooling technologies on the energy budget and heat loads associated with small computer facilities (less than 15 standard racks) using available tools. The technologies under evaluation will range from novel chip, tray, rack, and room solutions, including both current commercial offerings and a variety of nascent concepts at various levels of maturity.


Specific Duties:


The intern will utilize Excel and other tools to layout a small computer room, a general construct for air flow, and a variable number of racks, and then characterize heat loads, and estimate the impact of different cooling technologies and equipment configurations.

  • Research and convey information in oral and written form
  • Assist in preparing draft documentation to be used to prepare for technology evaluations or specific applications
  • Prepare summaries of specific analyses as needed
  • Review and summarize key points/internal issues
  • Attend meetings and vendor presentations, and provide input on engineering issues and concerns
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • At the conclusion of the program, a presentation will be prepared and briefed to senior leadership 







  • A rising junior or senior in an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering

  • Must meet ICD 704 eligibility requirements for a TS/SCI polygraph clearance, candidates will be screened as a part of the interview process

  • Demonstrated ability to research and analyze complex issues independently and then communicate well thought out and fact-based conclusions

  • Some familiarity with heat modeling concepts and techniques

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with demonstrated ability to alter method and means of communication to best suited for the receiving audience

  • Required to uphold a high level of confidentiality of all work performed

  • Organized, strong attention to detail and self-motivated

  • Strong initiative, interpersonal skills, and work ethic

  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
