Job Description

Description

SAIC is looking for an Optical Payload Subsystem Engineer to support a dynamic program in Chantilly, VA. This position requires an active Top Secret/SCI with CI Polygraph.

In this role, you will provide payload engineering and technical assistance within a Government Program Office.  This includes applying engineering knowledge to support the design, manufacturing, and testing of advanced optical payload components, assemblies, and subsystems. Initial responsibilities will focus on advanced focal plane and payload design across a broad spectrum of optical remote sensing phenomenologies. Duties may adjust as the payload and spacecraft progress through design, development, integration, and test towards launch.

Key duties/responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work in an interactive team environment with Government customer leads, payload developers, and other subject matter experts.

  • Apply engineering knowledge to support the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of advanced optical payload components, assemblies, and subsystems.

  • Assist in requirements development, and support requirements flow-down and traceability.  Assist with ensuring compliance to interfaces and standards, or ensure appropriate deviations/waivers are in place.

  • Evaluate system, subsystem and unit level design, as necessary, to determine if the design is adequate to meet program requirements and cost effective.

  • Assess subsystem technical performance within cost and schedule constraints.  Identify risks to program plans and schedules, and support development of corrective action plans.

  • Participate in Failure Review Boards (FRBs) to troubleshoot and resolve anomalies and test failures.  Develop mitigation plans and identify impacts to subsystem, spacecraft, and mission performance.

  • Confirm requirements verification by evaluating unit, subsystem, and vehicle performance and environmental test data, analysis, and inspection results.

  • Assist in preparation of RFP documentation (SOWs, CDRLs, specifications, etc.) and conduct ECP technical evaluations.

  • Travel within the U.S. approximately one to two times per month for approximately 3-4 days per trip.

Qualifications

TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors and fourteen (14) years or more experience; Masters and twelve (12) years or more experience; PhD or JD and nine (9) years or more experience.

  • Active TS/SCI with Poly
  • MS in Optical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar technical discipline
  • 5 years of engineering experience with satellite payload systems

  • 5 years of System acquisition experience, specifically writing and evaluating requirements, procuring hardware, and monitoring development contractor performance

  • Expertise in high fidelity advanced sensor concepts, designs, and performance across a broad spectrum of remote sensing phenomenologies

  • Experience working in a spacecraft System Program Office (SPO) or a satellite development facility

  • Able to confidently and proactively execute Commander’s intent, within the bounds of SETA authority but in the absence of detailed Government direction, while interacting with prime- and sub-contractors to ensure Program development remains on schedule, technically sound, and within budget

Desired Qualifications:
  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or similar technical discipline
  • Experience with multiple spacecraft programs and a variety of satellite payloads
  • Experience with early life-cycle engineering activities/milestones, payload & spacecraft integration and test, and Launch and Initialization (L&I) activities
  • Knowledge of high fidelity multi-spectral imaging concepts, sensor designs, and implementation
  • Knowledge of Signal Processing, Image processing, sampling theory, data compression
  • Knowledge of Semiconductor fabrication and advanced focal plane fabrication
  • Understanding of radiation effects and testing of semi-conductors
  • Knowledge of CMOS and CCD sensors designs, arrays and operation
  • Experience testing/evaluating sensor performance
  • Knowledge of electro-optic detectors and sensor performance specifications
  • Knowledge of Sensor Calibration techniques and approaches
  • Knowledge of Image Quality Metrics
  • Experience in environmental testing of space hardware
  • Knowledge of contamination standards, sources, and mitigation techniques for ensuring cleanliness of space hardware throughout the lifecycle
