Job Description


SAIC is looking for a highly motivated Engineer to perform Mission Assurance and Independent Verification and Validation of launch service contractor (LSC) guidance, navigation, and controls solutions.   At the San Bernardino engineering center we are a multi-discipline team of propulsion, structures, fluid mechanics, software, guidance, navigation, and controls, and avionics engineers. 

The center supports the Rocket System Launch Program (RSLP) which is a United States Air Force program that provides quick access to space for other government agencies.  We work with various launch vehicle contractors throughout the country and perform independent verification and validation (IV&V) of their launch vehicle designs.  In addition to RSLP IV&V, the center also leads the force development evaluation effort of an existing Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system and also supports the future ICBM program Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD).


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Mentor junior engineers in GN&C concepts, processes, tool development and analyses

  • Perform non-linear six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) simulation analysis

  • Perform autopilot linear stability analysis
  • Perform navigation analysis based on a variety of sensors
  • Validate 6DOF simulation models
  • Review and verify system level and launch vehicle requirements

  • Develop, modify, and maintain software tools that predict pre-flight performance under nominal, off-nominal, and Monte Carlo flight conditions

  • Perform post flight verification of simulation predictions

  • Update models based on designs, test results, and other data

  • Support design reviews and milestones as necessary

  • Prepare presentations, reports, and other contract deliverables related to analyses performed

  • Present results of analyses to, and address issues and concerns with, program office, customers, launch contractors, and independent peer review teams.



Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or applied mathematics or applied physics or related program and 7 years of related experience

  • Experience in at least two of the following: control systems engineering, dynamic six degree of freedom modeling and simulation, launch vehicle analysis, and/or navigation systems

  • Experience in FORTRAN and/or C/C++ on Linux platforms

  • Proficiency with MATLAB and MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • Demonstrated presentation skills and experience interfacing with program offices, customers, associated contractors, and other program related organizations

  • Experience leading multitasking team efforts and guiding the technical progress of  inexperienced engineers

  • Requires a proactive, self-starting, independent, flexible engineer with excellent interpersonal skills

  • Ability to  obtain DoD Secret Security Clearance


Desired Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current DoD Secret (or higher) Security Clearance

  • Understanding of missile engineering disciplines including guidance and controls, aerodynamics, structural dynamics

  • Ability to write software source code to perform analysis

  • Experience in Linux scripting, makefiles, and Python

  • Experience in the use of structured software development process for tool updates
