Job Description


SAIC is seeking a junior robot algorithms and controls engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the Restore-L program in the Satellite Servicing Projects Division (SSPD) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. This position is located in Greenbelt, MD.


The Restore-L mission is a Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) Satellite Servicing Project Division (SSPD) managed mission. Restore-L is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the Restore-L Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. The SSPD is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test and operations of the Restore-L Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.



The engineer will provide algorithm and control engineering support for the Restore-L Robot Subsystem. The Restore-L Robot Subsystem is responsible for developing the robotic technology for the Restore-L servicing vehicle and operating the two robotic arms during the Landsat-7 servicing operations.

Job duties include:

  • Design and document robot algorithms for autonomous and tele-operated on-orbit robotic servicing tasks
  • Analyze and write reports for robot algorithm stability and performance at component and system levels
  • Work with robot software experts to implement robot algorithms on consumer and flight processors
  • Develop test campaigns to evaluate robot algorithms on commercial and flight robot hardware systems
  • Develop test campaigns to validate dynamics models used in simulation to analyze robot algorithm performance
  • Work with robot systems engineers to create functional and performance requirements for robot algorithms
  • Create and deliver technical presentations to support design reviews


  • Bachelor's Degree  in Computer Science or related engineering degree and 2+ years experience
  • Knowledge of two or more categories of standard robot algorithms including compliance control, forward and inverse kinematics, visual servo control, collision detection, trajectory planning, computer vision, and filtering
  • Experience with robot algorithm design, development, and implementation on robot hardware systems
  • Programming knowledge of object-oriented programming in C++
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and teamwork skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with practical application of linear control theory
  • Excellent knowledge of performance analysis for robot systems
  • Use of MATLAB, OCTAVE, or similar for robot algorithm design and analysis
  • Use of MAPLE or similar for robot algorithm design and analysis
  • Experience with developing test campaigns for hardware robot systems
  • Experience with use of metrology systems to analyze hardware robot system performance
  • Experience with serial and parallel robotic manipulators
  • Experience with software development for real-time systems
  • Experience with standard best practice software development lifecycle tools (git, svn, bug tracking, unit testing)
  • Experience with Open Robot Control Software (Orocos)
  • Experience with Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with space flight robotic systems
  • Experience with NASA mission lifecycle and review cycle (design reviews, requirements reviews, integration reviews, trade studies, etc.)
