SAIC is looking to hire a Medical Coder I to support our medical coding efforts at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. The primary duties are to review clinical documentation and assign medical codes for ambulatory surgery, observation, and emergency department facility and/or professional services; however, Medical Coder I personnel may be tasked to assign medical codes for facility and/or professional services for outpatient clinic services.

 
  • Make well-informed decisions, even when data is limited or solutions produce unpleasant consequences

  • Receive & respond to verbal messages & cues such as body language in ways that are appropriate

  • Utilize medical computer software programs to abstract, and/or evaluate clinical documentation & enter/edit diagnosis & procedure codes.

  • Write in a concise & convincing manner for the intended audience; which may include technical material

  • Display, courtesy & tact, ability to effectively develop and maintain relationships and work with individuals of all backgrounds.

  • Work with internal/external customers to assess needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations.

  • Be open to change & new information; adapt behavior or work methods in response to new information& changing conditions

  • High level of effort & commitment towards performing the work, using efficient learning techniques to acquire/apply new knowledge and skills

  • Understand & interpret written material, including technical material, rules, reports, charts, graphs, or tables; applies what is to specific situations.

  • Attention to detail & completeness with a thorough understanding of government rules & regulations, medical coding & reimbursement guidelines, & potential areas of risk for fraud.

  • Use imagination to develop insights into situations & apply new solutions to problems; assist in designing methods where established methods and procedures are not suitable or are unavailable.

Qualifications

Qualification:
  • Min. of 5 yrs. of medical coding experience in 2 or more medical or surgical specialties within the past 10 yrs., OR Min. of 3 yrs. Ambulatory Procedure Visit (APV) coding experience within the last 6 yrs. in a military coding environment

  • Min. of 1 yr. of performance in the specialty is required to be qualifying

  • An associate’s degree in Health Information Management; OR A university certificate in medical coding

  • At least 30 semester hours’ university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology; OR

  • Successful completion of Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding exam preparation courses that include the above coursework & lead to successful course completion & coding certification may be accepted in lieu of university/college credit by the AFMS MCPO

 
  • Selected applicant must do the following before starting, based on government requirements:         

    • Pass a pre-employment coding test IAW the requirements of the AFMS Coding Manual. 

    • Provide proof of specific vaccinations and CPR training that is required to work at the facility

    • The selected applicant will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements to obtain a NACI Clearance

       
 
  • Certification in good standing for each:

  • Professional Services Coding Certifications: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Certified Professional Medical Coding Auditor (CPMA); Certified Professional Coder (CPC); Certified Outpatient Coder (COC); or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P).

  • Continuing Education Requirements: Medical coders shall maintain the required continuing education hours in order to maintain current & proper national certification(s) requirements for this position at no expense to the Government
