SAIC is seeking candidates for part-time Assistant Animal Care I (Night Watch) positions in our San Diego, CA location.  Personnel in this position assist in ensuring the health and well-being of marine mammals during the early evening and overnight hours.  In this role, the successful candidate will have high ethical standards of animal care, be safety minded, strong organizational skills, excellent time management ability, and perform reliably under minimal supervision.

Description:

  • Job will require working outdoors at night in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • Personnel perform feeding, administration of food supplements and medications, perform observations of marine mammals, and assist with basic husbandry.
  • Deter the presence of nuisance animals following established NIWC processes and procedures.
  • Drive government vehicles to various locations, following all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Personnel will conduct walking facility inspections of piers and enclosures to ensure animal safety, and integrity of animal facilities and enclosures.
  • Report any discrepancies or issues needing attention in a timely manner.
  • Maintain detailed records and activity logs.
  • Operate and maintain specialized equipment.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
  • Work environment will consist of walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, sliding/transferring equipment.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) and two (2) years or more related experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to provide proof of citizenship.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be physically fit and demonstrated the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Committed to safety standards and requirements.
  • Experience with animal care and/or training, commercial maritime operations, or experience as a marine mammal care custodian.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Perform well in a collaborative team-oriented environment, good conflict resolution skills.
  • Convey a professional image and positive attitude regarding SAIC and the U.S. Military.
  • Personnel must be able to work flexible work hours (shift work) including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Target salary range: Up to $40,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
