Job Description




Support the research and development efforts of the NASA Land Information System (LIS) team in the Hydrological Sciences Lab at NASA GSFC. The expected research and support activities are comprised of contributing to the development of surface water modeling and data assimilation capabilities within LIS; conducting data-driven modeling research exploring the optimal use of terrestrial remote sensing data, particularly SWOT data, with hydrodynamic models; working with multiple remote sensing datasets from past, current, and future sensors; and support the development of the next generation Earth Information System (EIS) by developing integrated water cycle modeling tools in open science environments utilizing remote sensing data from NASA and other agencies and commercial platforms. Across all the tasks listed above, lead the analysis and synthesis of research from model integrations and lead the development of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences.


Required Education and Skills

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in hydrology, atmospheric science, geophysics, or related discipline.

    High level understanding of:

-       Earth systems modeling, including model frameworks, development, implementation, evaluation, and validation;

-       Development and application of hydrodynamic models and river routing schemes;

-       Integration and assimilation of satellite data, particularly radar altimetry and SWOT;

-       NASA Land Information System (LIS);

    Proficiency with Python, Fortran and other scripting languages, Unix, and multiprocessor environments, and an understanding of MPI.

    Excellent written and oral communication skills

    Good organizational skills related to:

-       Workload planning and progress tracking

-       Management of multiple tasks

       Team player
