Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

SAIC is seeking an experienced and motivated Remote Sensing software engineer to build the algorithm infrastructure to process hyperspectral remote sensing data. Specifically, this system is intended to process data from the next generation hyperspectral microwave sensors (i.e., the Hyperspectral Microwave Photonic Instrument, HyMPI) and the Conical Scanning Microwave Radiometer – Hyperspectral, CoSMIR-H). This is a joint NASA/NOAA effort with high visibility for career growth and high potential for significant improvements in weather and climate prediction.

Specific job duties will include:

  1. Develop and optimize the retrieval processing algorithm for HyMPI and CoSMIR-H.
  2. Perform runs and organize datasets.
  3. Create the infrastructure to process data from a planned field campaign that will involve  CoSMIR-H, Lidar, rawinsondes (ground-based) and existing satellite data will need to be processed, collocated, stored, re-run using multiple configurations of the code.
  4. Assist in building an infrastructure to perform OSSEs/trade studies using the NASA GEOS Data Assimilation System (GEOS DAS).
  5. Assist in building an infrastructure for machine learning (AI/ML) algorithm development.

Required education, skills and experience:

·       MS or PhD in software engineering, Earth science, physics, computer science or applied mathematics

·       5+ years developing complex software for scientific applications in a high-performance computing environment.

·       Strong programming skills including Fortran, Python, C++, Unix/linux shell scripting.

·       Strong communication skills and proven ability to work both independently and with a team.

Desired skills/experience

·       Experience with diagnostic/graphics packages such as IDL, Matlab, GrADS

·       Familiarity working with scientific data formats (e.g., HDF, NetCDF, GRIB)

·       Strong mathematics skills

·       Experience working with radiative transfer codes.
