SAIC is seeking an experimental physicist to join our Bioeffects Sciences team conducting basic and applied research on optical radiation effects in support of the Air Force Research Laboratory.  The selected individual will need experience in optics, specifically working in a laser laboratory and being familiar with equipment including q-switched laser systems, precision timing electronics, and custom imaging systems.  The work will focus primarily on high-speed imaging of laser ablation, with the goal of developing models to more accurately simulate laser ablation.

Responsibilities include:

• Conduct research on laser ablation, both experimental and theoretical.
• Collaborate with colleagues on development of experimental and analysis techniques. 
• Communicate results both orally and in writing.

Qualifications

• PhD in a physical or biological science or engineering field.
• Experience with designing and constructing optical systems.
• Operating high-energy lasers, including high power continuous wave systems and high peak power q-switched lasers.
• Expertise with high-speed imaging systems.
• Knowledge of MATLAB or Python for development of custom imaging processing tools.
• Must be a U.S. citizen

Desired Skills:

• Publication history demonstrating the ability to conduct independent research.
• Development of physics-based models based on parameters extracted from imagery.
• Experience with LabView.
• Experience with data acquisition systems.
• Experience with Schlieren and shadow photography.
