Description

SAIC is seeking a Supporting Physical Scientist for UFS Model Development to support NCEP/EMC in the development of the convective parameterization within the Unified Forecast System for simulation domains spanning regional to global and simulation lengths spanning days to seasons. This position is located in College Park, MD.

Job Description:

  • Improve existing cumulus convection schemes and develop new convective parameterizations in cooperation with EMC senior scientists and colleagues from OAR (Oceanic and Atmospheric Research) and the UFS community.
  • Test and evaluate convection parameterization schemes for UFS applications across different temporal and spatial scales.
  • Work with other physics developers to improve various physics suites for different UFS applications.
  • Participate in research-to-operation transition of the physics parameterizations in the UFS applications.

Qualifications

Required Education: 

  • Bachelors and two (2) years or more experience; Masters and 0 years related experience.

Required Experience:

  • Advanced knowledge of atmospheric convection processes and the associated parameterization techniques.
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.
  • Skills and knowledge of High Performing Computing on various platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.
  • Knowledge of modern software development practices and version control software, in particular Git/GitHub/Gitflow.
  • Knowledge of earth system modeling.
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment with shell scripting languages.
  • Ability to perform complex work in a fast-paced environment.

Desired Experience:

  • Experience with the Common Community Physics Package and the UFS applications.
  • Experience with the development of physics parameterizations.
  • Experience with the development of earth system models.
  • Experience in model testing and evaluation and/or knowledge of verification principles.

Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder to qualify and must live in the US for 3-5 years prior to application (please indicate in your cover letter).
