Job Description

Description

SAIC is seeking an Earth System Land Model Scientist to support the Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) for the development of land model physics parameterizations as part of the Unified Forecast System for regional short-range, global medium-range weather and global sub-seasonal to seasonal climate predictions.

Note: The work location is at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD.  This hybrid role does offer the ability to work from home 2-3 days per week.

Job responsibilities to include, but not limited to:

  • Development and implementation of land model physics parameterizations within the Common Community Physics Package (CCPP)
  • Testing and evaluation of land model parameterizations in land-only and single column model configurations, in the global atmospheric model, and in the fully-coupled earth system model to improve representations of land-related physical processes, and their interactions with other model physics, in the Unified Forecast System.
  • Perform the job duties in an independent, collaborative and initiative way, applying innovative methods for the primary work areas.
  • Work with others on the global forecast system improvements and for transition-to-operations, and will also work with external collaborators to develop and improve atmospheric physics parameterizations for use within the Unified Forecast System framework.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years or more experience; OR Master’s Degree and zero plus (0+) years or more experience
  • US Citizen or Green Card holder with the ability to obtain a NACI clearance.  For the Green Card holder to qualify for the clearance they must have lived in the US for a minimum 3 years prior to application.  An EAD is not accepted.
  • Experience in land model evaluation, data post-processing and statistical analysis including accuracy and uncertainty analysis, especially at the land process level.
  • Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices, particularly the GitHub/Git version control software and environment.
  • Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as FORTRAN and Python.
  • Knowledge of earth system modeling and land-atmosphere interactions with demonstrated experience in developing land model parameterizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment
