Job Description

Description

SAIC is seeking a Spacecraft Systems Engineer on the NASA OMES II contract in support of the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) program at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The position is located in Lanham, MD.

JPSS is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next-generation operational Earth observation program that acquires and distributes global environmental data primarily from multiple polar-orbiting satellites.  The program plays a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans and coasts, and the space environment, which support the Nation’s economy and protect lives and property. NASA’s GSFC is managing the development of the system for NOAA.  The spacecraft and science instruments are managed by the NASA JPSS Flight Project located in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The Spacecraft Systems Engineer will be a member of the NASA Flight Project’s system engineering team focused on the spacecraft development and test program for the next three satellites at the spacecraft provider’s Gilbert, Arizona facility.  As a representative of the NASA Flight Project the systems engineer will provide technical support in the planning, preparation, conduct, and oversight of satellite integration, test, verification, and anomaly resolution.  Experience is less critical than drive, ability and desire to learn, capability to work through problems and get the job done.  This position is not managing others; it is doing the work necessary to ensure mission success.

Job duties include:

  • Operating as a high output, quick to learn functional team member on a large, geographically distributed team of engineers, managers and technicians developing 12 instruments and three spacecraft
  • Proactively identifying and solving technical problems throughout all project life phases
  • Ensuring contractor adherence to JPSS requirements
  • Test procedure review and discrepancy resolution for the system
  • Verification artifact and data reviews
  • Requirements verification
  • Reviewing and providing inputs to technical documentation including test procedures, test and status reports, procurement specifications, Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), and Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
  • Critical thinking and the use of spacecraft engineering experience and methodologies to ensure mission success
  • Written and verbal reporting to various levels of leadership

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelors and five (5) years or more experience; Masters and three (3) years or more experience; PhD and 0 years related experience

Required Experience:

  • Experience on challenging projects with proven high output performance on engineering teams
  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM field with at least 5-years of related experience
  • Systems engineering experience
  • Knowledge of system engineering tools and processes
  • Experience with systems engineering disciplines and requirements verification processes

Desired Experience:

  • Applied Systems engineering experience associated with NASA spaceflight missions
  • Understanding of NASA Systems Engineering processes
  • Experience with NASA mission life cycles and review processes (design reviews, requirements reviews, integration reviews, trade studies, etc.)
