Description

This position is for a Network Engineer to support the Vanguard 2.2.1 program. The Vanguard 2.2.1 program provides transparent, interconnected systems and security support for the Department of State (DOS) Bureau of Information Resource Management (IRM) program. This IRM program supports the DOS to successfully carry out its U.S. foreign policy mission by providing enterprise architecture design, engineering operations and maintenance support services for desktop computers, servers, networks, firewalls, and enterprise applications.

This Network Engineer position is in the Operations (OPS) Branch of Information Management Resource (IRM) Global Telecommunications Services (GTS) Division which is a 24 x 7 operational environment responsible for monitoring, managing and maintaining core enterprise network devices and core system components. The position may allow temporary hybrid remote work due to Covid-19.  Position may be called back onsite at any time at the customer's request.

Description of Duties

  • Provides Tier III Operational Support to the classified network systems and components in support of the Department of State classified networks.  Acts as the escalation point for Tier II operations staff.
  • Serves as the lead incident manager for all incidents on the Classified Network and is the escalation point for Tier 2 operational support staff.
  • Provides consulting and training on the design and use of the network systems and architectures and ensures all employees are familiar with the use and management of those systems.
  • Uses monitoring, performance analysis, network management, software and hardware equipment to troubleshoot and isolate problems, gauge performance and activity.
  • Devises solutions to operational problems within the capacity and operational limitations of installed equipment.
  • May develop and execute contingency plans for network related hardware failures, including isolated and major outages.
  • Provides internal consulting, technical guidance, information and support to application developers, computer operations, workstation support, management and departmental clients.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor degree in a computer science/computer engineering related discipline or appropriate years of experience working on networks and systems.
  • 8 years IT network engineering support experience (Tier II, Tier III, network infrastructure implementation and maintenance)
  • Intermediate experience in one or more of the following: Cisco Nexus, Cisco Catalyst routing and switching, data center cabling maintenance
  • Experience supporting encryption technologies including the KG-175 platforms.
  • Experience supporting the configuration and maintenance of various network hardware and software, primarily Cisco catalyst and Cisco Nexus switching and routing technologies
  • Experienced with performing root cause analysis, risk identification, and risk mitigation.
  • Knowledge of cabling standards, fiber optic and copper cable termination.
  • Routers - CISCO and Juniper Switches 

Required Clearance

  • US Citizenship
  • Active Top Secret Clearance

Desired Experience, Skills & Attributes

  • ITIL ® Foundation certification
  • Certifications: Network +, Cisco CCNA, Cisco CCNP or equivalent, BICSI Certification
  • Familiarity with Department of State environment (data and voice networks, IT security systems, policies and procedures), Foreign Affairs Handbooks (FAHs), Foreign Affairs Manuals (FAMs)
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate effectively, self-awareness, and excellent written and oral communications.
