Job Description


SAIC is actively seeking a Data Scientist with an active Secret clearance to support our customer in Alexandria, VA.

The Data Scientist will lead the integration of data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning tools, techniques and methodologies into DoD policy, guidance, and training for DoD’s 100,000 plus engineers using DoD’s Specialty Engineering (SpE) disciplines (Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality (M&Q) Engineering, Human Systems Integration (HSI), and System Safety Engineering).  This is a hybrid remote position that requires periodic on-site meetings in the National Capitol Region.   

Job Responsibilities:

  • Technical aspects of data analysis, ML and other AI techniques applicable to specialty engineering (particularly R&M and M&Q) including use of sensors and telemetry for data collection and condition based maintenance
  • Research and development of guidance for assessment of human-AI teaming in operational contexts to include how use of AI/ML in DoD weapons systems affects those systems’ reliability, quality and system safety
  • Tailoring data analytics and AI/ML use for specialty engineering to different Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF) pathways
  • Research and development of guidance for metrics and assessment techniques for coverage, bias, safety, and robustness of ML models
  • Research and development of guidance for use of AI and ML on Service Maintenance Data Collection Systems


Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors and nine (9) years or more experience; Masters and seven (7) years or more experience ; PhD or JD and four (4) years or more experience

Required Clearance:

  • Secret clearance required
  • US citizenship required

Required Skills:

  • Experience is pre-analytic areas of data collection, understanding, cleansing, integration, storage and retrieval.  Ability to determine the appropriate analytics based on the data and the desired outcomes, using techniques including feature detection, statistics, data mining, predictive modeling, machine learning, natural language processing, and business intelligence.
  • Demonstrated interpretation of the validity of results in order to communicate the meaning of those results.
  • Familiarity with data wrangling, analytics, visualization software and programming languages, including analytics methods for big data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to compile, analyze, interpret, report, present, and respond to inquiries on data, information, and procedures associated with Specialty Engineering initiatives.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with an advanced understanding of customer relationship building.  
  • Proficient in various data analysis tools, techniques and methods to apply qualitative and quantitative methods to the analysis of data utilizing various libraries and packages, including extract, transform, and load (ETL) tools, data APIs, and data services.  Use of AI/ML libraries and frameworks such as TensorFlow, Keras, and PyTorch. 
  • Experience applying machine learning to signal processing and/or other time-series data analysis applications. 
  • Experience creating data visualizations or dashboards using relational and aggregate data sources, including experience working with any of the following: Pandas, Tableau, matplotlib, D3, neo4j.
