Job Description


SAIC is seeking a Environmental Satellite Product Systems Engineer to work in the Data Products Management and Services group within the JPSS Ground Segment Project to manage the Algorithm Sustainment activities for the JPSS Program.

JPSS is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) next-generation operational Earth observation program that acquires and distributes global environmental data primarily from multiple polar-orbiting satellites. The program plays a critical role to NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in weather, climate, oceans and coasts, and the space environment, which support the Nation’s economy and protect lives and property.

The work activities may include:

  • Supporting JPSS funded scientific algorithm projects by tracking schedules, milestones, obligations, and expenditures to plan; write, track, and develop mitigation plans for project risks and issues to best meet the needs of the JPSS mission
  • Maintaining JPSS data product requirements; develops and coordinates requirements updates and changes through the configuration management process by developing and providing support material at various review boards; review and provide impact assessments of data product requirement changes and waivers
  • Developing JPSS satellite and data product status materials in support of weekly and monthly status meetings, program reviews, ad hoc meetings, and scientific conferences.
  • Performing the Algorithm Change Process for JPSS algorithms and coordinate and communicate JPSS algorithm changes, updates, and anomalies to various stakeholders
  • Working closely with the team who operates and manage the JPSS Cal/Val processing system to ensure user requirements are successfully met
  • Working closely with the NESDIS/STAR leadership on all aspects of the algorithm sustainment and calibration/validation activities of the JPSS program



  • B.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate between technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of JPSS algorithms and data products with the ability to understand and review technical documents, requirements, and waivers.
  • Passion for learning and becoming an expert in new topics
  • Knowledge of weather data products and user needs
  • Broad knowledge of NOAA satellite systems and requirements processes
  • Experience with cloud development and computing methodologies and processes


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with Agile methodology and DevOps.
  • Able to work independently and on a team.
  • Familiarity with JPSS and associated Level-1 and Level-2 data products
  • Familiarity with JIRA
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as: Java, Python, C/C++, Javascript, Perl, HTML5, Ruby, etc
  • Experience with Unix/Linux systems.
